New Members Always Welcome!
If you missed our Open Day in April but are still considering having a go at playing bowls, come along to one of our home games, which start at 2.00pm. Watch the game, ask questions, and arrange for a session at our club on a mutually convenient date and time to have a go yourself. Talk to our members, have a drink and make the arrangement - you know you really want to join us and play.
2025 Season
We are actively seeking new members to join us and people of all ages and experience are welcome to come along to the Open Day and give the game of bowls a try.
Our recent Open Day was very successful, despite the showers, and we look forward to welcoming several new members to the Club.
If you weren't able to attend and would like to find out more about the game of bowls and our club, then do please use the Contact Form on this website and we will be in touch to arrange a trial session.
To give you a better idea of the club and its activities and achievements, please take a moment to read an extract from a report compiled for its 2024 AGM. Since that was written in addition to a fun evening of skittles, the Club recently held a highly enjoyable Quiz evening in Twyford and will continue to explore opportunities for other social events.
Our Green Team has and continues to work very hard to provide an excellent playing surface that our members can enjoy throughout the season and the high standard of our green is frequently complimented by visiting clubs.
TWYFORD BOWLS CLUB AGM – 5th November 2024
We have ended the year with 33 members; 7 of whom joined us this year following our open day. This event has proved very beneficial in increasing our numbers and it has been gratifying to see these new members supporting our internal events and the courage to put their names down for our matches against other Bowls Clubs. For the statisticians amongst you, we played 29 matches this year; we won 9, lost 13 and drew 1. Unfortunately, 6 matches had to be cancelled due to severe weather conditions (5) and one club was unable to raise a team. This compares very favourably with last year’s results when we won 9 and lost 13. I’m sure we would have won the 6 cancelled matches!!! Many thanks are due to Alan Waymont for all the match details.
After much discussion at committee meetings, Mark Rowley and I have introduced a handicap system which was first trialled at the Sam Barber Cup at the end of the season. I’m delighted to say that the overall feedback was very positive. We would hope to monitor these handicaps during roll-ups and matches against other clubs; ideally, individual handicaps should be coming down the more that the game is played but like golf, that is not always the case!!!!!! The intention is to make all members (but particularly those who are new to the game) feel more comfortable in our internal competitions and therefore more likely to enter the Knock Out competitions. The Rendall Cup is unlikely to be included as it is regarded as the Club Championship and is therefore a Scratch competition. Whilst on the subject of Competitions, the committee is looking at the possibility of updating our honour boards and replacing the existing plywood boards with silkscreening/transfers onto acrylic boards.
The Club highlight of the year was, without doubt, the winning of the Friary Cup. A Knock Out competition, organised by Friary Bowls Club in Winchester and played by many of the clubs we play against in our friendlies. We entered 2 teams of 3 and I was delighted to be at the final – at the Friary Bowls Club – to watch our team of Dave Chalke, Paul Binge and Alain Le Goff beat a very strong team from Colden Common Bowls Club by 23-18.
Socially, the 2 B-B-Qs hosted by Alan Waymont, after our internal events, were well supported and enjoyed by all. We are having a Skittles evening at the Phoenix Inn on Friday 29th November and the committee is looking at the possibility of a Bowls holiday in the future – if there is sufficient demand/interest. Venues and costs are being investigated at the moment.
Finally, it would be extremely remiss of me not to say ‘thank you’ and ‘congratulations’ to our Greens team (headed up by Mike Justice). They have, unfailingly, produced outstanding rinks all year to allow us to host our friendly matches and to play our internal competitions. Our visitors have, without exception, commented most favourably on the quality and presentation of our green. To all of you – well done indeed. We must all try and help out a little bit more when the call to arms is made!
Paul Mantell
Congratulations to new member, Keith Clark, and to old hands Richard Hodgkinson and Paul Mantell on winning The Rosemary Cup at a sun drenched Roman Road on Sunday 27th April. Richard Hodgkinson also won the first Spider of the season.
Keith Clark and Sarah Harrigan, both new members, together with Mark Rowley won The Centenary Bowl club competition recently. They are pictured below with their trophy.
